Congratulations to CHRC's Youth Services Coordinator

Cincinnati, OH - Friday, January 31, 2014, from 8:30 am-3:00 pm, at Xavier University, Ms. Jaime Bryant, CHRC Youth Services Coordinator, will serve as one of six facilitators at the You...th Leadership and Civic Engagement Academy. On Friday, approximately sixty high school students from Aiken High School and Woodward Career Technical High School will engage in experiential group activities and reflections to address and reinforce many of Ohio's New Learning Standards for High School Social Studies in the areas of American Government and Contemporary World Issues.

In 2012, the Youth Leadership and Civic Engagement Academy was designed by the Community Building Institute at Xavier University. It offers high school students an opportunity to attend a series of workshops, gain knowledge and experience, and see themselves as community leaders. The youth leadership development strategies and curriculum focus on creating engaged citizens- young people with the knowledge, skills, passion, and commitment to making their communities better places to live, work and grow.

The information that will be covered through hands-on activities include:
• Reason for attending these types of workshops
• Assumptions about youth/ older adults
• Defining a celebrity, role model and leader
• Defining engagement

This opportunity is free, and transportation and lunch is provided. The Academy is sponsored by PNC Bank and the Eigel Center for Community Engaged Learning. The Cincinnati Human Relations Commission is a proud partner in this effort.

Anti-Gun Violence Week at Aiken High School

Cincinnati, OH- The Cincinnati Human Relations Commission (CHRC) & Aiken High School are partnering on an Anti-Gun Violence Week, which has been moved to February 11-February 14, 2014, due to inclement weather. This idea was initiated by a former Youth 2 Work Consortium employee of CHRC. She proposed a rally, and a week came of it. Ms. Jaime Bryant,CHRC Youth Services Coordinator, committed to assisting with the planning and coordinatingfor this week. The school counselor, Ms. Sandi Horine, agreed to be the CPS staff to assist withthis endeavor. It is time to make a change with our youth, and the time is now!
We hope you can join us as we unite with a Cincinnati Public School, Aiken High School, to
increase the peace inside and outside of the classroom. Below is a schedule of events:

• February 11, 2014 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm- Gang Awareness & Prevention Day

Cincinnati Human Relations Commission (CHRC) 2014 Board Officers

Cincinnati, Ohio – The Cincinnati Human Relations Commission (CHRC) is proud to announce the 2014 Board of Commissioners Elected Officers.

Charleston C K Wang

Mr. Charleston C K Wang will serve as the agency's next Board President. Mr. Wang has served on the Board of Bridges for a Just Community, the American Red Cross, Interethnic Council, Cincinnati Chinese American Association, and other community organizations. He holds a J.D. from Salmon P. Chase College of Law and LLM in Comparative Law (Southeast Asian & Islamic Law) from Charles Darwin University. He maintains an active practice in U.S. Immigration Law including the law of asylum.

Stanley Chesley

      Mr. Stanley Chesley will serve as the Board’s next Vice President. Stanley M. Chesley has a long history of serving on a number of local and national philanthropic boards. Stanley recently completed his term as national president of the Jewish National Fund. He has served on the Board of Commissioners of Grievances and Discipline for the Supreme Court of Ohio (serving as chair and vice chair) and the University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees. Stan was recently appointed to serve on the Lunken Airport Board.

Elizabeth Brown

Ms. Elizabeth Brown has been re-elected as the Board’s Secretary. Elizabeth Brown  is the Executive Director of Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME). HOME is a nonprofit agency in Cincinnati, Ohio, which enforces fair housing rights and works to build stable, integrated communities. HOME was formed in 1968, the same year the Federal Fair Housing Act was passed, and is nationally recognized as a leader in the fair housing movement.
Prior to coming to HOME in 2004, Ms. Brown worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Cincinnati Field Office, with jurisdiction over 13 counties in Southwest Ohio. During her 6 years with HUD, she worked across all of HUD’s programs, from FHA and homeownership to community development and public housing. Ms. Brown has a J.D. from Boston College Law School and worked with the Tennessee Valley Authority for 13 years in legal and management positions.

On November 17, 1943, the Mayor's Friendly Relations Committee was created by resolution of Cincinnati City Council. The Committee was the second group of its type established in the US. On March 17, 1965 the City Council adopted Ordinance 112-1965 providing for the establishment of the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission (CHRC).

Since 1943, the agency has remained steadfast in its efforts to help our community to overcome prejudice and discrimination, build mutual respect and understanding, and become more harmonious and cohesive.
